Annual Fifth-grade Story Contest
The Berkeley Branch of the California Writers Club sponsors an annual creative-writing contest for fifth-grade students in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Cash prizes are $100 for First, $75 for Second, $50 for Third, and $20 for each of many Fourth-place winners. In 2005 there were 12 Fourth-place awards. Certificates of achievement are awarded to all students whose stories are chosen by their teacher for entry.
This year we will honor the teacher of the grand prize with a cash award of $50, and we will accept an unlimited number of entries per class. Entries are not accepted directly from students or parents.
This is the way it works: Fifth-grade teachers in the two counties may choose any number of their students' stories from each classroom. Stories must have a maximum length of 1,000 words and must be original and the student's own work. The fee is $2.50 per entry, paid by check or money order.
The contest is announced each January, and the deadline for entering is usually in March.
